Willowvane was founded by Erica Chan Tuomi in 2016. At the age of 13, Erica relocated from her home in Hong Kong to North Carolina. Shortly after graduating from high school, she attended East Carolina University and began studying graphic design and photography.
Upon receiving her bachelors degree, Erica’s professional career began in Philadelphia and continued in Los Angeles. The time spent at various creative firms enabled her to collaborate with a diverse group of creatives. Working in a team setting allowed for the exchange of ideas and feedback. This provided the opportunity to gather many different perspectives which helped Erica form new ideas in her work. It was during this time period she began working with ceramics.
The idea of making something by hand is the simultaneous process of continual discovery through practice and observation rather than perfection, and results in unique and beautiful imperfection.
Minimal in shape and color, Erica’s ceramics incorporate, at times, no more than two colors to complement the natural shade of the clay. These elements allow her to produce works that are not only harmonious but can also be used in everyday application.
